SUMMER PROGRAMME V:
PENUMBRA ASKS UMBRA: DIGITAL FEMINISM IN POST-RICE BUNNY CHINA

Asymmetry, 102a Albion Drive, London E8 4LY
3-5PM, 06.08.2023

Lecture performance by Ling Tang, followed by feminist open mic

In this lecture performance, feminist sociologist Ling Tang will use the Zhuangzi Classics text ‘Penumbra asks Umbra’[1] to theorise radical feminist practices on Chinese digital platforms. They will examine the Inter-Asia travel of Korean and Japanese radical feminisms that shapes the current Chinese digital ecology, then analyse the rise and fall of key radical feminist accounts on microblogging platform Weibo with a focus on strategies for community development and protection. With the current wave of suppression on digital feminist accounts, Tang argues that feminist hope lies in the poetic, affective, assertive and anonymous modes of creative resistance. In doing so, they add a feminist layer to the ‘Penumbra asks Umbra’ text, which today is widely used as a theoretical foundation for queer analysis in Taiwan. [2]

To round off the night, Tang will host an open mic which celebrates the powerful lives of women with all genders welcome in solidarity. Kicking off with a live music performance, they will invite the audience on stage to share their thoughts, afterthoughts, or poetry and words of any kind in a safe, inclusive, and joyful space of creative expression.
