Recipient of 2021 Curatorial Writing FellowshipChisenhale Gallery, LondonYu’an Huang

We are excited to announce the recipient of the second Asymmetry Curatorial Writing Fellowship at Chisenhale Gallery, London. Yu'an Huang, a Taiwanese born, London-based independent curator will begin her six-month placement on 18 October 2021 under the mentorship of Chisenhale Gallery’s Director, Zoé Whitley and her curatorial team.

Selected from a national Open Call earlier in the Summer, for her project proposal KUA 跨 (Chinese for ‘crossing beyond’) Yu’an will produce a cross-platforms publication investigating transnational experiences. Drawing on five years of Yu’an’s ongoing research, the multi-medium curatorial project aims to narrate from existing artworks, international affairs, literature and individual experiences to develop and pinpoint the language that belongs to the post-globalised generation.

About the Curatorial Writing Fellowship

The Asymmetry Curatorial Writing Fellowship at Chisenhale Gallery creates a dedicated opportunity for critical thinking and writing, and public-facing research outcomes within the curatorial sphere. The initiative is offered to one mid-career curator who identifies with Greater Chinese culture and heritage based in the UK, every six months. The programme provides the curator with a unique opportunity to expand their writing practice by working across Chisenhale Gallery’s award-winning programme. Additionally, the Fellow will benefit from participation as a UK associate in Delfina Foundation’s renowned residency programme, gaining professional development opportunities, mentoring, as well as peer-to-peer exchange with other practitioners in-residence.

Yu’an’s placement follows the first successful Fellowship undertaken by Chisenhale Gallery’s inaugural Asymmetry Fellow Hang Li, who will conclude with the project outcome to 'Remove Affinity: Working together from a distance' in November 2021.

This initiative is one of three placements beginning this Autumn in London, alongside the PhD Scholarship for the ‘Advanced Practices’ programme at Goldsmiths, University of London (awarded to Weitian Liu) and the Curatorial Fellowship at Whitechapel Gallery (awarded to Zoe Diao).
