Behind the Scenes of ‘Yining Fei: Feral Sediment’with Sharon X. Liu

Watch our fellow Sharon X. Liu discuss the development of Yining Fei: Feral Sediment, the first commissioning project she led as the 2025 Asymmetry Curatorial Fellow at SculptureCenter, New York.

Developed in close collaboration with Shanghai-based artist Yining Fei, the exhibition centres on the milu, a rare species of deer native to China whose survival has been shaped by captivity, diplomacy and modern infrastructure. Through the concept of ecological futurism, it explores how multiple temporalities intertwine, challenging linear narratives of origin, displacement and return.

Sharon also reflects on the programmes she has supported at SculptureCenter over the past year, including the In Practice 2027 programme, which she will continue to develop with the curatorial team in the coming year.

Yining Fei: Feral Sediment is on view until 28 December 2026. Learn more about the exhibition on SculptureCenter's website.
