We are pleased to welcome artist Yasmine Anlan Huang for a presentation of her recent publication Becoming Everyone Everywhere (2025). Bringing together short stories, notes, and snapshots composed across multiple locations and temporalities, the bilingual book builds on the recurring autobiographical figure of Siming and extends Huang’s ongoing engagement with autofiction, fragmented subjectivity, and writing as a speculative form. Through this mediating figure, the publication rehearses lives not yet inhabited, tracing a voice folded across languages, geographies, and conditions of displacement: a voice continually scrutinised, revised, and reimagined.
The evening will also include the UK premiere of Crescendo (2024), a single-channel film that moves between performative enactment and personal estrangement, attending closely to questions of language, narration, and doubleness. Structured through the pairing of the artist and an actress friend who stands in for her, the work begins with the declaration, “I don’t belong here,” foregrounding a negotiation of subject positions and asking through whom a story can be spoken, staged, or made legible.
The programme continues with readings from the publication, followed by a conversation between Huang and writer and film critic Cici Peng. Together, they will explore key concerns in Huang’s practice, including displacement, institutional failure, trauma, and the role of writing, translation, and world-building as forms of repair and reconciliation.
This event forms part of our ongoing programme, which activates publications within our library collection as sites of collective reading, discussion, and reflection.
